The Sweet Decay: Why You Should Avoid Sugary Sweets

When we were young, we were always told to brush our teeth afterward. Sometimes it already feels like a chore, a time consuming routine, or even sometimes an activity that we can skip as we’d like. Children have a tendency to do the things they want because of the limited knowledge; they think sometimes it puts them in peril. Sweets is the number one temptation for children, and it is the number one enemy of children’s dental health.

For every candy, chocolate, and all the other food stuffs that a child consumes, there is always food debris that gets left behind on the mouth, leaving it lodged in between the teeth and settling on the surface of the enamel. Once it sticks to different parts of the mouth, it provides enough nutrients for streptococcus bacteria to live on and causing them to multiply and plaque to build fast.

It’s not the sugar itself that causes this to happen, but because of other things as well. Sugar in pre-packaged food and drinks comes with other ingredients made up of various substances that may be harmful to the tooth. This is how tooth decay begins so quickly. The bacteria eats the food debris and once they get full they excrete a specific acid that targets the enamel; One minute your tooth is fine and the next thing you know you have a decay and you’re facing the problem of loose teeth.

Since we now know the negative effects of sugary sweets to our oral health, let’s try to discover how to curb sugar cravings or what alternative food groups to eat and eventually fix loose teeth. An obvious alternative would be the “No Sugar” snacks. If you’re a health buff, you may have some of these lying around but these snacks also appear in supermarkets and grocery stores so you can shop for them at your convenience. Another better alternative to munching on sugary sweet snacks is, well, eating fruits! Instead of reaching out for a bar of candy, a pack of chocolates or a bag of chips, get a healthier alternative that is as sweet as you are craving for. Fruits are a good alternative than candies for something sweet to appease your tongue. Keep a stock of fresh fruits in your fridge like watermelons, pears and grapes. Apples are very filling and will not pack a fat punch as much as a calorie-loaded chocolate and nut bar. You can also opt for sweet strawberries if they are in season. Strawberries are one of the top fruits you should be gobbling anyway, because of its rich vitamin and mineral content.
