Gum Disease in Adults

Few adults would disagree that a haggard smile is the sign of a hard life. Even though most of us do have to work hard to maintain a quality of life, we don’t want our smiles to suffer as a result.

Add to that the fact that these days radiant teeth and a beaming smile are as crucial to your appearance and overall health as full head of hair or a cholesterol-free heart.

It’s not easy staying healthy. It demands that equal attention is given to your diet, hygiene routine and exercise program. Plus these days we are bombarded with images of celebrities at the peak of physical fitness.

Depending on your point of view, these images can either motivate you or depress you. Either way, it is no longer acceptable to sit on the couch ordering take-out food and gorging on chocolate. Well, it can still be done but we all know the damage that kind of lifestyle will do.

Modern media means that everyone is better informed when it comes to standards of health and it is the responsibility of every individual to take advantage of that information.

Many of the factors that are known to cause gum disease are directly related to quality of life. For example, if you are someone who has a stressful job, sleeps little and eats on the run, then you greatly increase your chances of getting gum disease.

Also if you smoke, you are at great risk. In the United States seventy-five percent of gum disease sufferers have the disease due to smoking. That is because smoking reduces the flow of oxygen to blood cells, which makes gums susceptible to infection.

Then there are other more subtle causes. For example if you grind your teeth at night or have a tendency to clench your teeth at work or when you are under stress, you run the risk of damaging the tissues which leads to gum disease.

Adults who suffer from diabetes are also a greater risk from gum disease. Diabetes alters the blood sugar levels in the body and because of this, it makes sufferers more susceptible to many infections and one of those infections is gum disease.

In short, your overall health is a reflection of your lifestyle choice. It’s important to get it right because one of the illnesses you fight off when you do is gum disease. There are many natural gum disease remedies worth exploring.
